For five years, two murders have lain unsolved and nearly forgotten in the police vault in the quiet little burg of Frederick, Maryland. Until a young lawyer turns up dead, and the familiar pattern of the Coworker killer plunges the sleepy northern town back into darkness. As the body count begins to rise, it soon becomes chillingly obvious that this time the killer has no intention of stopping.

Lacking a suspect, hounded for answers by the ravening media, the police have nowhere to turn but Nate Castle, College teacher by day, locally-renowned PI by night. The case of the faceless Coworker murders is the most demanding of his career. Nate is thrust into a spotlight he’s been avoiding for the past decade. Somewhere out there is a predator against which Nate is the only defense, but the troubled detective has his own demons to fight. Haunted by regret, crippled by the bottle, Nate stands alone in the darkness, challenging a foe he cannot see.

Then the Coworker makes a small but critical mistake. And that’s when—all hell breaks loose.

A murder, cruel and efficient, sets the stage. A serial killer is on the loose.

Nate Castle is a forensic psychologist and college teacher who in the past has worked with the police in solving crimes. There is a new case of serial murder; rather, an old case in which the killer has again become an active, vicious murderer. When a body is found, Castle begins to investigate; but he is firmly told to take a hike by the hostile lead detective. That changes when the two find they have something in common -- the bottle. They become kindred souls working together to solve the murders.

Castle is a different breed of hero, one with the attributes we expect but one who operates under a layer of alcohol addition, sometimes in an alcohol fuss. Castle must detox. It is a fight to remain sober.

The strength of the novel is in the psychological development of the characters. The reader sees the human side of Castle and the other main players with sorties into their thoughts, quirks, and demons. There are forays into the dark mind of the serial killer, into matter-of-fact depravity. The murders are solved, of course; the novel concludes with intensity. I was a bit disappointed with the investigative part of the novel. But it is peopled with interesting, richly drawn characters; overall, an entertaining story.

The Coworker The First Nate Castle Novel edition by Vernon Rush Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Liked the plot and characters. Kept me interested and moved along. I would rather not have so many scenes involving retching....that got tedious. The book almost became more about alcoholism and less about a murder plot toward the end. I understand the main character was fighting his demons but it felt as if the central story faded away. Quite a few typos. There instead of their, etc....Still worth a read.
“The Co-Worker The First Nate Castle” has an intriguing plot that also involves a number of amateur lessons on the psyche of serial murderers. The main thread of this novel was about hiding in plain sight and I think that the author remained true to this theme when the main character – Nate, solved the case.
The beauty of this novel was however marred by the frequent appearance of poorly structured sentences and typographical errors. Some sentences almost made no sense, for example The house was in fairly severe disrepair. This was not obvious from the road and something about its wide white planks disguised the fact. It just looked many of the other houses that were set out on non-standard lots.
Very good story line that can make a very good serial. More attention needed on the editing.
The novel opens up with the murderer telling his victim to get in the car on one raining night. Then it says `In a small town like Frederick, when murders happened, the chances were great you knew the person who did it. It might not be someone you hung with, but you could have passed him or her during the course of your stay in that town.' Then you meet Nate Castle, a college teacher by day and a private investigator by night. He is an alcoholic except when he is assigned a case. It really is a good book. It is a must read. I am definitely putting this author on my favorite author list.
The book is a novella, not a novel, and it is quite short at about 108 pages. The town of Frederick has a serial killer, who seems to like killing young women, usually by strangulation, so to the extent that the object of the exercise is to find who did it, this is a mystery/crime story. The prologue, and some later chapters, put the reader inside the mind of the killer, and it tries to give the mind of such a killer. I have no idea whether this is valid, but it is certainly presented well. However, the bulk of the book is from the point of view of Nate Castle, a professor at the local community college and a doctor of forensic psychology, and therefore a consultant to the local police force. Or more precisely, he should be but he is not because he is habitually drunk. About eighty percent of the book involves Nate trying to stop drinking, and shows what the life of a severe alcoholic drying out is like. Thus when Nate goes to a crime scene, he does not really look for clues; instead he looks for somewhere to throw up. Even worse, the senior detective is, well, an alcoholic. The book is rather light on police work, and because we see through Nate's eyes, we are short on clues, partly because Nate cannot focus enough. There is police work, and in the end they follow a logical approach, but because Nate cannot focus, we do not see this until it is explained. Rush inserts some red herrings as well, and at the end, when things are resolved, I was far from convinced the story was self-consistent, but I cannot justify that remark without spoilers. As a crime story, I found it to be fairly indifferent in the sense of the process of solving the crime, as opposed to the crimes themselves, but as a story about an alcoholic drying out, while it is somewhat grim and unpleasant, and with the caveat that I do not know enough about this to know whether what is presented is valid, this was quite intense and convincing. The grading I give is based on that, and not as a crime story.
